A U.S. unit of Switzerland’s Synthes Inc., the world’s largest maker of bone-mending devices, accused rival Spinal Kinetics Inc. in a lawsuit of infringing a new patent for artificial spinal discs.

Synthes (U.S.A.), based in West Chester, Pennsylvania, asked a judge to stop its rival’s infringement and to award damages after a jury trial, according to a complaint filed today in federal court in Wilmington, Delaware.

“Spinal Kinetics is depriving Synthes of the exclusive right to use and profit from its inventions,” Synthes lawyers said in the complaint, which targets its rival’s M6 intervertebral implant disc.

According to Spinal Kinetics website: The M6 Artificial Spine Disc is designed to replicate the anatomic structure and biomechanical performance of a natural disc. Its innovative design incorporates an artificial nucleus to allow axial compression and a woven fiber annulus for controlled range of motion in all 6 degrees of freedom.
